The New York Art Residency and Studios (NARS) Foundation Artist in Residency Program supports emerging and mid-career artists and curators working across all disciplines through three and six-month residencies. The program is open to both International and US-based artists, creating a shared space for artistic dialogue and international cultural exchange for an extended period of time.
International Applicants may apply for three-month, six-month, or twelve-month residencies. Three month residencies are the length of one season, six-month residencies will span across two seasons, and twelve-month residences will span four seasons. For residencies longer than six months, please contact us prior to submitting an application.
Internationally based artists are welcome to apply during our bi-annual Open Calls, or at any time during the year using our rolling application. These applications will be reviewed quarterly and results will be sent within the next quarter. Internationally based artists are eligible to apply via the rolling application OR during the bi-annual Open Calls
In 2025, the fee for a three month residency will be $9,122, six months is $17,332, and twelve months is $32,930.
In 2026, the fee for a three month residency will be $9,900, six months is $18,770, and twelve months is $35,615.
The studio is a work space only – housing is NOT provided. Artists who need additional funding and support for program fee, travel, materials, and accommodations should apply to other funding sources. If selected to be part of the program, the international applicant has the option to defer the start of their residency once in a two year period. Please note that only US-based artists are eligible for the Partial & Full Residency Fellowships at this time. The applicant needs to consider accommodation, living, travel and health insurance costs for the duration of their stay in New York.
A list of organizations that have funded international residencies can be found here.
INFORMATION REGARDS VISAS & TRAVEL DOCUMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS:
NARS Foundation is not able to provide specific advice or assistance with securing Visas or travel documents for the International Residency Program. It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure they have all necessary documents and requirements for entering the US in order to attend the Residency. General information on how to get started with the Visa process may be found below. Any further inquiries should be directed to the US State Department Consulate or relevant legal advisor.
NARS Foundation recommends all selected foreign applicants make contact with the United States Consulate or Embassy in their home country to prepare a Visa to enter the US. B1/B2 visa is generally issued to enter the United States for business/tourist purposes which allows one to attend the residency programs. Applicants may check their Visa Appointment Wait Time with the link above.
Upon request, NARS Foundation will provide a letter in support of the visa application to incoming participants.
The International Residency Program is conducted in the English language. Applicants should be proficient in English to participate and benefit from the program.
