Lauren Colbert creates layered textile works that use color, repetition, and structure to explore the tension between connection and isolation in contemporary life.
Lauren Colbert’s work is rooted in textile experimentation and explores the intersection of color, connection, and play through woven structures and sculptural forms. Her practice examines the relationship between connection and isolation through moments of proximity and interruption within a contemporary life shaped by digital culture. Working primarily on a floor loom, she uses weaving to think through color, structure, and connection. Lauren uses the repetitive nature of the weaving process as a form of meditation, which grounds her to the surroundings and material. Gaps, slits, and layers interrupt her woven surfaces, creating moments of pause and reconnection. Color functions as both material and language, shifting through relationships of proximity, light, and surrounding hues.
Lauren Colbert is an artist and educator based in Brooklyn, New York. She started her textile career as an assistant costume designer in film and television and has worked with notable clients such as Netflix, HBO, Hulu and NBCUniversal. She has attended residencies at Peters Valley School of Craft, the Digital Weaving Lab at Praxis Fiber Workshop and Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. Lauren teaches weaving at the Catskill Weaving School and has been a visiting instructor at Peters Valley School of Craft. She currently serves on the board of the Textile Study Group of New York (TSGNY). Lauren holds a BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design and an MFA from The New School, Parsons School of Design.
