Guiyoung Hwang’s work explores various ‘partitions’ that create personal and collective boundaries. From physical structures to norms of the nuclear family, she observes manifestations of such boundaries in daily life and tries to re-claim the sites to reveal their unstable and ironic nature. Employing performative interventions, mimicry, and parody of forms of communication, Hwang engages herself in conflicting situations. In the process, Hwang often manipulates the relationships between the one who addresses and the addressee, the directly involved subject and the implicated subject. The temporary and site-specific projects documented by a variety of media question the construction of subjectivity in relation to space, language, and power.

Guiyoung Hwang is a conceptual artist who lives and works in Philadelphia and Seoul. She received a BFA in sculpture, a BA in communication from Seoul National University and an MFA from CalArts in 2012. Her exhibitions include Mark the Unmarked at Commonwealth and Council in Los Angeles, Non-negotiable Relationships at Space Willing and Dealing in Seoul. She has also participated in group shows including Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, South Korea. She is a recipient of 2018 Project Grant, Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
