Season III, 2025

Gill Gatfield works across sculpture, land art, installation, extended reality, AI, and systems architecture, using the tools of conceptual abstraction. Drawing from philosophy, science, and technology, she locates speculative futures within ancestral knowledge, and investigates thresholds for emergence and transformation. Carving matter, code, space, and text across real and virtual realms, her practice explores transient mediums as sites of becoming – where instinct, consciousness, and memory surface and cohere. Centring the Earth’s rhythms and deep time, Gatfield transforms ancient and precious materials into monochromatic fields that breathe, and first-forms that hold presence. Fluid across scale and context yet rooted in place, the artworks are imbued with stories of cultures and land. Inviting engagement, agency shifts to the viewer as (co)author of the participatory work.

Gill Gatfield holds Master of Fine Arts (Hons) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Auckland. Her international research and residencies include the Saas-Fee Summer Institute of Art in New York, Foreign Objekt Intelligence Lab, Vermont Studio Center, Poison Creek NZ, and KØN Museum in Denmark. She has received numerous awards including NSW Government Sculpture Commission, VSC Sculpture Fellowship, Arts Council NZ Global Digital New Work Grant, and recognition as a CODAworx Creative Revolutionary. Gatfield’s work has featured in biennales, museums, and public spaces across Oceania, Europe, and North America, with key presentations at the Venice Art Biennale, Venice Architecture Biennale, Kunstverein am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz Berlin, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and KØN Museum.
