Artist Statement/ Biography

Juyi Mao is a contemporary artist who currently lives and works in New York City. He earned his BA from Xiamen University and an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art with focuses on new media art, critical theory, and cinema study. His works are in various modes from low-resolution to 4K, and from found images to performance art as expanded cinema. He has always been drawn toward the alchemy of moving images and sound art, and fascinated by the fluidity and literality of the time-based media.

Mao's work has been screened and exhibited in art venues internationally, including Anthology Film Archives, New York City; La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, New York City; Het Nieuwe Instituut, Rotterdam; CAFA Art Museum, Beijing; Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Urban Screen Productions, Sydney; Metro Arts, Brisbane; Sàn Art, Ho Chi Minh City; Cherry Street Pier, Philadelphia; Walter Otero Contemporary Art, San Juan; CICA Museum, Gimpo; Space Camp, Baltimore; Sandao Gallery, Xiamen, among others. His films have played at various festivals including the 2019 Channels Festival, NewFilmmakers NY, NOFLASH Video Show, Saigon Experimental, The One Minutes, 67 Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, and 24e Rencontres Internationales Traverse.
