2022 Season IV Studio Relief Residency

Artist Statement/ Biography

Ann Kim combines sculpture, printed image, and text to resuscitate the ache and poignancy of ordinary moments felt firsthand inside the studio and out in the world. She's particularly interested in the relationship we have with the objects around us - the way we grow attached to them, the way we wrestle with them - and the vulnerabilities within us that are revealed in these interactions. She likes to use a variety of processes to transfigure things once felt into a new experience for the viewer. She's drawn to materials that act as stand-ins for the heft and pliancy of flesh and the ballast of body weight, so the body is felt rather than seen. In the end, what results is a family of objects that feel improvisational and playful in their construction, made with a light, yet deliberate, hand.
