2015 Season I, 2015 Season II

Artist Statement/ Biography

Format No. 1 is a new optical sound format.

The project consists of a series of visual compositions, that can be turned into sound with an Iphone app.

Martha Skou and Louise Foo focuses on minimalistic "building bricks" of image and sound, that can be reduced to pixels and frequencies.

The app that they have developed uses the iPhone camera to translate black pixels to a range of frequencies realtime, which allow for the user to move freely and get a hands on experience with sound.

The arrangement of the visual objects are inspired by musical notation systems from history, and you can think of the black cubes as bites of sound, and the visual compositions as open scores.

Martha and Louise share a fascination with the study of oscillations and vibrations of sound, and they wish to express the magic of sound though their work.

Their work combines analog techniques with digital technology to create new experiences - not just for people to see or hear - but for them to have an experience in physical space.
