Internships

We are a small and dedicated staff who is ready to share our ample knowledge with you.  Our Interns play a key role in the overall administration and management of the organization and have the opportunity to present ideas and shape its path.  This is not a coffee-fetching, copies-making, humdrum position.  This is an excellent opportunity for an out of the classroom experience at a small arts non-profit.

Energetic and aspiring art professionals are encouraged to experience various aspects of running an artist residency, organizing exhibitions, developing public programs, and fundraising. Your contribution assists us in making our programming accessible to our growing audience as we strive to support artists. Spanish and Mandarin language skills are a plus!

The five internship positions at the NARS Foundation are:

  • Assist with press outreach to local, national, and international contacts to promote our events, artists, and mission
  • Seek to identify methods to engage the community in creative ways
  • Assist in the production of stimulating content in keeping with the NARS Mission Statement and maintain an active presence on multiple social media platforms.
  • Contribute to organization’s Tumblr account: develop, write and publish entries
  • Assist with the content and design of flyers and e-blasts
  • Administrative duties related to programs and outreach as needed

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU? You are the person who lives on social media, constantly sharing stories and photos with your friends and community. You are motivated and comfortable taking initiative and working independently on projects and display an active interest in contemporary visual arts, marketing, and artist resources. You have superior communication skills and a friendly demeanor. You have a strong grasp of various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. You know the ins and outs of graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.) Experience with HTML? That’s a plus!

  • Assist Program Manager in organizing youth, family and school programs, including workshops, in-school activities and exhibition/studio tours
  • Create post-program reports for all educational public programs for use in grant reporting
  • Help to develop community relationships to increase visibility of community and education outreach initiatives
  • Provide general administrative support for International Artist Residency Program and public programs

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU? You have experience and enjoy working with children and adults of varied ages and backgrounds. You are interested in building ties with the local community. You are a creative and energetic individual who is enthusiastic about bringing NARS public programming initiatives to Sunset Park. You are available on weekends; our public programs take place on Saturdays. Speak Spanish or Mandarin? That’s a plus!

  • Assist in facilitation of the International Residency artists’ weekly studio visits, communal events, and tours
  • Research and compile weekly list of art events throughout New York City and e-mail to Residency and Studio Artists
  • Assist the Operations Coordinator with Residency and Exhibition Open Calls through answering inquiries and processing applications and payments
  • Assist the Program Manager with organizing exhibitions including liaising with artists, cataloging work, and creating checklist/pricelist
  • Provide general administrative support for public programs and International Artist Residency Program

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU? You are interested in working directly with artists and want to know more about non-profit programming. You are looking to strengthen your skills in artist development support. You are a self-starter who can recognize a problem and tackle it with minimal assistance. You have a meticulous attention to detail and superior communication skills. You’re handy aka you know how to work a drill, use a level, or wield a paintbrush? That’s a plus!

  • Assist the Operations Coordinator with facility operations including managing our 32 studios and gallery space
  • Assist the Founding Director and Operations Coordinator in initial planning of the Fall Fundraiser, including researching and developing relationships with sponsors
  • Support coordination of special events and provide logistical support for exhibitions
  • Some grant research and development support for fundraising events
  • Assist the Operations Coordinator with Residency and Exhibition Open Calls through answering inquiries and processing applications and payments
  • Other administrative duties as needed

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU? You are the person who loves to meet new people and whose events are known to your friends as “not to be missed.” You are comfortable taking initiative and working independently on projects related to operations and fundraising. You are detail oriented to a nearly obsessive level. You’re handy – you know how to work a drill or wield a paintbrush. You are a professional and creative individual looking to gain experience in fundraising event and studio management. Have a sense of humor? That’s a plus!

  • Interview artists-in-residence for the NARS Foundation blog, creating stimulating content in keeping with the NARS Mission Statement
  • Maintain an active presence on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Attend programs and events related to NARS programs and create documentation to utilize for grants and promotion (some evenings and weekends required.)
  • Administrative duties related to programs and outreach as needed
