2022 Season IV, 2023 Season I

Artist Statement/ Biography

Gabriela Těthalová’s paintings are a mixture of many intertwining plans and permeable surfaces, organic shapes and undulating lines, bringing dynamics and an imaginary relationship to irregularity and unpredictability into the paintings in sharp contrast to the continuously reflected theme of repetition. Rigorous work with geometric shapes and a bold colour palette is combined with rapid gestural strokes that can evoke automatic or childlike painting. It is the combination of these elements that brings playfulness to the canvases, contrasted with a degree of restlessness of viewer‘s gaze flowing and trying to see the painting through all its layers. The composition, however, is broken up into many interlocking and overlapping surfaces that disrupt the ability to orient oneself in space.
