This most recent body of work is a series of oil on canvas paintings derived from pen drawings from my sketchbook. These smaller images are projected onto canvas, traced and filled in with black and white paint, allowing for gestural brushstrokes and layers of depth while maintaining the essence of the original pen on paper sketch. Some of these drawings are from collaborative games such as Exquisite Corpse. Other elements are random doodles, scribbles, notes, numbers or information.
One reoccurring theme comes from a drawing exercise I practice on the subway. Touching the pen to the paper and attempting to maintain a consistent pressure balance, I allow the movement of the subway car to create the drawing. These gestures take on their own forms and become similar to a Rorschach test, where each viewer may observe different images.
